As we begin a new year, it’s natural to hope for change and growth. For believers, this is more than self-improvement; it’s about stewarding the life and time God has given us. Aligning our goals with His plans ensures our efforts rest on a solid foundation (Matthew 7:24-27). Here are five ways to set achievable, God-honoring goals for the year ahead.
1: Pray Before You Plan. Spend time in prayer and quiet reflection on His Word, asking, “Father, what should I focus on? How can I reflect Christ better?’ This aligns your desires with His and invites the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
2: Review your past Successes. It is common for us to look at what we don’t have and what we have not achieved. Instead, look at what you have accomplished and what you did to get to where you are. Build upon these successes to reach your future goals. Focus on what you have and what you are grateful for in your life; remember, what you focus on is what you amplify.
3: Use the S.M.A.R.T. Make goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. So, a goal to “read the Bible more” could be, “I will read through the New Testament by June 30th.” The faith element acknowledges your need for His grace.
4: Break It Down and Celebrate Milestones. Large goals can feel overwhelming. Break them into monthly or weekly steps—if your goal is to memorize 24 scriptures, aim for two per month. Celebrate each milestone with gratitude, viewing it as a small victory in obedience.
5: Accountability Partners. Proverbs 27:17 says that as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. Share your main goals with friends and family, pray together, and check in periodically. This encourages accountability and keeps you steadfast.
Planning carefully and trusting God with the outcomes, you approach the new year without anxiety and with hopeful anticipation of what He will do.
