The Ontario government is set to introduce legislation that would ban tolls on provincial highways.

The ban would apply to the Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Expressway once uploaded to the province, as well as the province’s 400-series highways. It would not cover the 407, which is operated privately.

The government is also proposing to make the current freeze on driver’s licence and Ontario Photo Card fees permanent through legislation, which the province says will save drivers an estimated $66 million over the next five years. By legislating the current freeze, which was originally put in place through regulation, the government says it is ensuring that any future increases can only be made through legislation.

The province is also proposing to automate the licence plate renewal process, starting this summer. The Ford government had already eliminated the need to purchase a plate sticker, but drivers still had to go through the renewal process. Until the legislation is in place, drivers are still required to renew.
