Bart Millard Talks About ‘I Can Only Imagine 2’, Touring and More
Bart Millard, the lead singer and founding member of the multi-platinum Christian band MercyMe, has a life story as inspiring as his music. Born on December 1, 1972, in Greenville, Texas, Bart was raised in a household affected by hardship and trauma. After his parents’ divorce and his mother’s departure, he experienced years of physical and emotional abuse from his father. His dream of playing football was cut short by a severe ankle injury in high school, a setback that led him to the school choir and ultimately to his vocation as a singer-songwriter.
The pivotal moment in Bart’s life occurred during his teenage years when his father was diagnosed with terminal cancer. This prompted a spiritual awakening in his father, leading to a heartfelt father-son reconciliation before his father’s passing in 1991. From this journey of pain, redemption, and hope emerged “I Can Only Imagine,” the 1999 song that became the best-selling Christian single of all time and later inspired a 2018 feature film.
Fast forward to 2026: ‘I Can Only Imagine 2’, released on February 20th. The sequel explores the creative journey behind MercyMe’s 2017 hit single, “Even If.” Host of The Drive, James Kurtis, had the privilege of speaking with Bart Millard about his involvement in ‘I Can Only Imagine 2’.
During the conversation, Bart shared what it was like stepping into the role of producer on the film’s set. He described the experience as an incredible creative outlet, blending storytelling and music in a way that allows the band’s journey to reach a new generation. He shared how he balanced his time between being on tour and working on set. He also opened up about the emotional weight of revisiting his past and the joy of seeing his life’s story continue to inspire others.
