Canada will reach a new milestone today.

Statistics Canada says our population will reach 40 million people today.

The Population Clock – which watches births, deaths and migration — will reach the mark at 3pm ET today.

Chief statistician Anil Arora says ‘’it’s a strong signal that Canada remains a dynamic and welcoming country, full of potential,” adding that it is a cause for celebration, heading into Canada Day.

Canada added more than one million people last year – the most ever in a single year, and enough to continue to lead the G7 in population growth.

The next big milestone – 50-million – could be reached, according to Stats Can, by 2043.
