Hamilton Public health Warns of Measles Case at McMaster Children’s Hospital

Hamilton Public Health Services is investigating exposures in Hamilton related to a confirmed case of measles from another jurisdiction.

The health authority is reaching out to all known contacts who may have been exposed to the virus.

In a release, the City says people may have been exposed at McMaster Children’s Hospital on Saturday February 24, 2024 from approximately 6:51 am to 2:09 pm.

Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a respiratory virus that spreads easily to those who are not vaccinated against measles or who have not previously had it. Infants under one year of age, pregnant people, and people with weakened immune systems are at an increased risk of severe complications.

Measles symptoms begin 7-21 days after infection and may include, a high fever of 38.8 C (101 F) or greater, cough, runny nose, drowsiness, irritability, and red, watery eyes.

Small white spots with white centres, known as Koplik’s spots, may occur on the inside of the mouth and throat. A red, blotchy rash could develop three to seven days after symptoms start.

Authorities are asking anyone who believes they may have been exposed to the measles virus to contact Public Health Services at 905-546-6170 as soon as possible to speak with a Public Health Nurse who can assess your risk of developing measles. Monitor for signs and symptoms of measles for 21 days after the date of exposure.
