“Unprecedented” Amount of Land Already Consumed by Wildfire in 2023

Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair says the national average for hectares of land to burn in the month of May, over a 10 year average, is 150,000 hectares.

At a briefing this morning, he said roughly 2.7-million hectares of land were burned last month.

Wildfires have already been sparked in areas of northern Ontario while a large part of the province, including cottage country around Georgian Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Timmins, and Algonquin Park, is under an extreme fire warning.

As firefighters continue to battle out of control blazes in Nova Scotia, displacing 21-thousand residents, at least 100 American firefighters will be arriving in that province this weekend to assist.

Another 200 firefighters from South Africa are expected to help in western Canada.
