The Coronation of King Charles the Third Saturday is bringing to light the monarch’s views on faith.

Charles has suggested that he would like to be known as “the defender of faith,” a seemingly small change, but a hugely symbolic one, from the monarch’s traditional coronation pledge to be “defender of the faith;” Christianity in general, and the Church of England specifically.

Charles has been more encompassing of faith since the 1990s and has often spoken warmly of the contributions of Islam.

Less than half of the population of the United Kingdom now describe themselves as Christian.

While Queen Elizabeth’s official title in Canada included “defender of the Faith,” Charles’ will not. He will officially be known in Canada as “Charles the Third, by the Grace of God King of Canada and His other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth.”
