Former PM Brian Mulroney Passes at 84

Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney has passed away at the age of 84.

Caroline Mulroney, an Ontario Member of Provincial Parliament, announced the news on social media yesterday, saying he died peacefully surrounded by family.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said he will always be thankful for Mulroney’s candid advice and generous mentorship.

While Poilievre noted Mulroney won the biggest majority in Canadian history he said it was the transformational change “he brought to his nearly a decade as Prime Minister that is most important,” pointing to his work on the North America Free Trade Agreement and his fight against South Africa’s apartheid policy.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was devastated to hear the news of Mulroney’s passing, saying the former PM never stopped working for Canadians, and “always sought to make this country an even better place to call home. I’ll never forget the insights he shared with me over the years – he was generous, tireless, and incredibly passionate.”

Trudeau said that as we mourn his passing and keep his family and friends in our thoughts, we should also acknowledge – and celebrate – Mulroney’s role in building the modern, dynamic, and prosperous country we all know today.
