Olivia Chow Sworn in as Mayor of Toronto

Toronto officially has a new mayor.

Olivia Chow took the declaration of office at Toronto City Hall this morning, about two weeks after winning the by-election – against 101 other candidates – to replace John Tory.

Chow hit the ground running after being elected on July 26th, beginning to hold transitional meetings the following day.

The 66-year-old, a former longtime city councillor and NDP MP is the first person of colour to lead Toronto.

In part, Chow campaigned on a platform to make Toronto what she calls a more caring and affordable city in which to live.
