Before the ‘Joy Top 20’ began in May 2015, TobyMac was still a listener favourite with singles like “Speak Life” and “City On Our Knees”. However, Toby’s fast track on JOY really began with his GRAMMY® winning 2015 album This Is Not A Test. The collection boasted JOY listener favourites “Backseat Driver”, “Lights Shine Bright”, “Move (Keep Walkin’)”, “Love Broke Thru”, “Beyond Me”, and “Feel It”.
Last month TobyMac (born Kevin Michael McKeehan) opened up about what it’s been like living without his 21-year-old son, Truett Foster McKeehan. His family tragically lost their oldest son, an aspiring rapper, to an accidental drug overdose in October of 2019. In the time since, TobyMac has expressed that things have not been the same since Truett’s death.
Toby told People magazine “God has rolled up his sleeves” giving him hope and allowing “little rods of light” to penetrate the darkness.
Struggling through the grief that followed Truett’s death in a brutally honest way fills TobyMac’s seventh studio album, Life After Death. The seven-time GRAMMY® winner recently told Billboard magazine “I immediately went to write, because that’s what I know to do when I’m in so much pain.”
“You go to [write] what you know, what you love and what brings you peace. I immediately started writing — and I wrote ‘21 Years.’ Then I wrote a song called ‘Faithfully,’ and I wrote ‘Everything About You’ in the first few months after Truett passed.”
Last year “Help Is On The Way (Maybe Midnight)” was JOY Radio’s Song of the Year! The hit was #1 four times and ranked for 23 weeks overall, including thirteen straight weeks in our top ten. It was also the second-fastest rising song in Joy Top 20 history, hitting #1 in seven weeks! (Lauren Daigle’s “You Say” did it in six weeks.)
TobyMac was named JOY Radio’s Artist Of The Year for 2021. With two more #1 songs this year (“Promised Land”, “The Goodness”) TobyMac is already in contention to repeat as our top solo artist in 2022.
