Better Cellular Coverage Coming for Toronto’s Subway System
Cellular service on Toronto’s subway system is about to get a lot better.
Rogers Communications Inc. has announced it is buying BAI Communications’ Canadian operations. In 2012, BAI was granted the exclusive rights to build the subway’s public WIFI and cellular network, but only Freedom Mobile signed on, leaving countless passengers without the ability to call 911 in most areas.
Upgrades over the next two years means all riders, with any wireless provider, will be able to access 911 throughout the line.
As it stands, 911 is only available to riders where the cell-network exists; on platforms, through concourses, and about a quarter of the subway tunnels.
