Peel Region to Split in 2025

The province confirmed Thursday that it is breaking up Peel Region.

The municipalities of Mississauga and Brampton will become their own, independent cities on January 1st, 2025.

It’s not yet known what exactly will happen with Caledon, but Mayor Annette Groves says the move is not something residents wanted, adding it feels like Caledon is a child of divorce.

Details on how the plan will unfold are still being worked out, but the province said yesterday it will appoint a transition board which will make recommendations to government on how finances and staffing will be split, along with how to divide regional services.
